Performance of Particle Flow Calorimetry at CLIC
The particle flow approach to calorimetry can provide unprecedented jet
energy resolution at a future high energy collider, such as the International
Linear Collider (ILC). However, the use of particle flow calorimetry at the
proposed multi-TeV Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) poses a number of significant
new challenges. At higher jet energies, detector occupancies increase, and it
becomes increasingly difficult to resolve energy deposits from individual
particles. The experimental conditions at CLIC are also significantly more
challenging than those at previous electron-positron colliders, with increased
levels of beam-induced backgrounds combined with a bunch spacing of only 0.5
ns. This paper describes the modifications made to the PandoraPFA particle flow
algorithm to improve the jet energy reconstruction for jet energies above 250
GeV. It then introduces a combination of timing and p_T cuts that can be
applied to reconstructed particles in order to significantly reduce the
background. A systematic study is performed to understand the dependence of the
jet energy resolution on the jet energy and angle, and the physics performance
is assessed via a study of the energy and mass resolution of W and Z particles
in the presence of background at CLIC. Finally, the missing transverse momentum
resolution is presented, and the fake missing momentum is quantified. The
results presented in this paper demonstrate that high granularity particle flow
calorimetry leads to a robust and high resolution reconstruction of jet
energies and di-jet masses at CLIC.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
Calculation of Elastic Green's Functions for Lattices with Cavities
In this Brief Report, we present an algorithm for calculating the elastic
Lattice Greens Function of a regular lattice, in which defects are created by
removing lattice points. The method is computationally efficient, since the
required matrix operations are on matrices that scale with the size of the
defect subspace, and not with the size of the full lattice. This method allows

Knowledge of Objective 'Oughts': Monotonicity and the New Miners Puzzle
In the classic Miners case, an agent subjectively ought to do what they know is objectively wrong. This case shows that the subjective and objective ‘oughts’ are somewhat independent. But there remains a powerful intuition that the guidance of objective ‘oughts’ is more authoritative—so long as we know what they tell us. We argue that this intuition must be given up in light of a monotonicity principle, which undercuts the rationale for saying that objective ‘oughts’ are an authoritative guide for agents and advisors
Characterization of vertical electric fields and associated voltages induced on a overhead power line from close artificially initiated lightning
Measurements were characterized of simultaneous vertical electric fields and voltages induced at both ends of a 448 m overhead power line by artificially initiated lightning return strokes. The lightning discharges struck ground about 20 m from one end of the line. The measured line voltages could be grouped into two categories: those in which multiple, similarly shaped, evenly spaced pulses were observed, which are called oscillatory; and those dominated by a principal pulse with subsidiary oscillations of much smaller amplitude, which are called impulsive. Voltage amplitudes range from tens of kilovolts for oscillatory voltages to hundreds of kilovolts for impulsive voltages
Ground state of a large number of particles on a frozen topography
Problems consisting in finding the ground state of particles interacting with
a given potential constrained to move on a particular geometry are surprisingly
difficult. Explicit solutions have been found for small numbers of particles by
the use of numerical methods in some particular cases such as particles on a
sphere and to a much lesser extent on a torus. In this paper we propose a
general solution to the problem in the opposite limit of a very large number of
particles M by expressing the energy as an expansion in M whose coefficients
can be minimized by a geometrical ansatz. The solution is remarkably universal
with respect to the geometry and the interaction potential. Explicit solutions
for the sphere and the torus are provided. The paper concludes with several

Influence of FK 506 (tacrolimus) on circulating CD4 <sup>+</sup> t cells expressing cd25 and cd45ra antigens in 19 patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis participating in an open label drug safety trial
We have taken the opportunity of a clinical trial of the potential efficacy and safety of FK 506 (tacrolimus) in chronic progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) to examine the influence of this potent new immunosuppressant on circulating T-lymphocytes in an otherwise healthy non-transplant population. Peripheral blood levels of subsets of CD4+ T lymphocytes expressing the activation molecule interleukin-2 receptor (p55 α chain; CD25) or the CD45RA isoform were determined sequentially in 19 patients that were treated continuously with oral FK 506 (starting dose 0.15 mg/kg/day) for 12 months. No significant change in the proportion of circulating CD25 + CD4+ cells was observed over the study period in which the mean trough plasma FK 506 level rose from 0.3 ±0.2 to 0.5 ±0.4 ng/ml. There was also no significant effect of FK 506 on the percentage of CD45RA + CD4 + cells in the peripheral blood at 12 months compared with pretreatment values. Analysis of a subgroup of 7 patients, who showed a sustained reduction in CD25 + CD4+ cells and a reciprocal increase in CD45RA* CD4 * cells for at least 6 months after start of treatment, did not reveal any difference in disability at one year compared with the treatment group as a whole. The side effects of FK 506 were mild and the overall degree of disability estimated by the mean Kurtzke expanded disability status scale (EDSS) score or the ambulation index did not deteriorate significantly in the 19 patients studied over the 12 months of FK 506 administration. © 1994 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted
Directional gene flow and ecological separation in Yersinia enterocolitica
Yersinia enterocolitica is a common cause of food-borne gastroenteritis worldwide. Recent work defining the phylogeny of the genus Yersinia subdivided Y. enterocolitica into six distinct phylogroups. Here, we provide detailed analyses of the evolutionary processes leading to the emergence of these phylogroups. The dominant phylogroups isolated from human infections, PG3–5, show very little diversity at the sequence level, but do present marked patterns of gain and loss of functions, including those involved in pathogenicity and metabolism, including the acquisition of phylogroup-specific O-antigen loci. We tracked gene flow across the species in the core and accessory genome, and show that the non-pathogenic PG1 strains act as a reservoir for diversity, frequently acting as donors in recombination events. Analysis of the core and accessory genome also suggested that the different Y. enterocolitica phylogroups may be ecologically separated, in contrast to the long-held belief of common shared ecological niches across the Y. enterocolitica species
